Learn How Richard Went From Sales Rep to Business Owner

Picture of Richard Turner, the owner of Modern PURAIR Barrie

Richard Turner had a successful career in B2B sales but even with the success he was having, he often found himself unchallenged.  He knew he wanted more.  After first learning about the Modern PURAIR® Franchise Opportunity, he almost passed it by.  Then after speaking to Modern PURAIR Franchise Owners, he realized that he could do it.

What type of jobs have you had before joining Modern PURAIR?

Most recently sales roles with increasing levels of responsibility. Mostly B2B sales working through distributors. Before I joined the sales world I was in Hospitality, on the Operations side of things. It was great to learn how to spend a budget, but learning how to make money to put in a budget came through my sales experience.

What made you want to own a business?

The challenge, to learn and build a business and team. Abundance – more money, more time with family, more flexibility, more everything. I also want my kids and family to have choices and experiences that I never had.

How did you know that it was the right time to become a business owner?

I didn’t, but I knew that I was ready and that I can do anything I put my mind, energy, and focus towards. As my career progressed in my previous role, I found myself unchallenged and felt I was regressing. It’s the ultimate challenge and I will be learning something new every day. It was through talking with Modern PURAIR and existing franchise partners that I realized, “I can do this”.

Tell us about the onboarding and training experience been so far.

It has been great. Every question I have had was answered. Modern PURAIR’s online training platform is also an awesome resource so you can refresh your memory on things that may have been forgotten.

Why was Modern PURAIR the right business for you?

It’s a business that people need, proven systems and processes, great training, and great network to lean on for ongoing support.

What has the peer support from other franchise owners been like so far?

Great! Everyone shares their candid experience, challenges, successes, and what they wish they did differently. I can’t wait to share my experience to help the next partners start off.

What are you most looking forward to about being a business owner?

Building a successful business, building relationships, creating desirable jobs in my community, and giving back / serving the community that serves me and my family.

What are your favourite things to be doing when you are not building your business?

I will have to let you know when things settle down on the business side of things. I am doing my favourite thing – building a business. Other than that, anything relaxing. Spending time with family, especially my wife and two young boys.

What do you love about the community you serve (Barrie, ON)?

The community in general and neighbourly feel – the people. When we moved into our new house, so many people came over to welcome us into the neighbourhood and I love that.

What advice do you have for anyone considering going from employee to business owner?

Go for it. If you’re waiting for the “right time” opportunities pass you by. If you’re thinking about it, now is the right time.
